Moka Pot Brew Guide

Given the bold taste, syrupy body, and their ability to create a slight crema atop their brews, Moka Pots are generally known as “stovetop espresso machines.”

The Moka Pot was first introduced in 1933 by Italian coffee maker, Bialetti who still manufacturers them today. Given the bold taste, syrupy body, and their ability to create a slight crema atop their brews, Moka Pots are generally known as “stovetop espresso machines.” In reality, though, the finished coffee ranks somewhere between a French Press and Pour Over in terms of intensity and clarity.

Unlike most other brew methods, when brewing a Moka Pot, you are limited by the size of the vessel both ways—that is, you can’t make more than the maximum volume and you can’t make less than the maximum volume. For the Moka Pot to function properly, the coffee basket must be full of grounds when brewing. The three most common sizes of Moka Pots make three, six, and nine cups. For this brewing guide, we’re going to use the six cup Moka Pot; however, we have included recipes for all three sizes in the chart below.

Step 1

Preheat your water. This is incredibly important, as starting with cold water directly in the Moka Pot and solely using the Moka Pot as your main heat source may lead to scorched coffee grounds.

Step 2

Measure your beans. For this recipe, we'll be using 25g grams of coffee for 275 grams of water.

Step 3

Grind your beans and fill the filter basket. If the basket isn’t full after grinding, add more. If it’s overfull or overflowing, level out the beans with your finger but don’t pack it down. Overfilling the basket will affect your ability to properly reassemble the Moka Pot for brewing.

Step 4

Add your heated water up to the fill line.

Step 5

Using a dry kitchen towel to avoid burning yourself, reassemble the Moka Pot by attaching the canister to the basket.

Step 6

Place the assembled pot onto a medium-low heat. Leave the top off so you can observe the coffee changing from a dark brown to a light, honey color

Step 7

When the coffee reaches the honey color, take the Moka Pot off the heat, place the top on the pot, and place it on a cold towel to stop the brewing process

Step 8

Pour into your favorite mug.
